Stadiums

The games were held in three stadiums from June 29 to July 5 , 1912 . Of the 11 games, 2 were played at the City Stadium in Traneberg , 5 matches were played at the Rosunda Stadium in Stockholm and another 4 at the Olympic Stadium , also in Stockholm .

Members

The tournament received a record number of participants at that time - 11 teams, each of which represented Europe. Teams France and Belgium refused to participate shortly before the draw. The team of Bohemia , which applied for participation, was not allowed to compete, as only nations that are members of FIFA were allowed to play. Like four years earlier in London, the UK was represented by the amateur England team .

As a result, 135 + 28 [2] football players from 11 teams competed at the Games in Stockholm:

Europe (11 teams)
  •   Austria
  •   United Kingdom (current champion)
  •   Hungary
  •   German Empire
  •   Denmark (current silver medalist)
  •   Kingdom of Italy
  •   Netherlands (current bronze medalist)
  •   Norway
  •   Russian empire
  •   Finland
  •   Sweden (hostess)

Amateur Criteria

Since the Olympic Games had an amateur character, the players were allowed to play football matches:

  • who never competed for money, did not receive large rewards or payment in any kind of travel and travel in connection with football matches;
  • who have never participated, assisted or taught at any level in sports for a monetary gain;
  • who have never been registered as professionals;
  • who have never sold, pledged, rented and did not show for money the prizes won at competitions.

Tournament course

Final: Danes captain Niels Middelba (with the ball) fights two opponents

In the first round of the competition, the home team - the national team of Sweden - met with the Dutch national team. Losing 1: 3 in the first half, the Swedes lost only 4: 3 in extra time thanks to a goal by Jan Vos. In Traneberg, the Finnish national team won against the Italian national team also in extra time.

In the second round, the Finns won again, this time against the national team of the Russian Empire, which did not play in the first round. In the second round, the UK team entered the game, led by a Chelsea player and team captain Viv Woodward. Having defeated the Hungarians with the score 7: 0, the British made their way to the semi-finals. Six of the seven unanswered goals in the gates of Hungary held Harold Walden.

In the semifinals, Walden scored all four goals of his team against the Finnish national team (the British won 4-0). Denmark in the other semifinal won the Netherlands 4: 1, with the only goal against the Danish goalkeeper Sophus Hansen scored by his compatriot Harald Hansen. As in the previous Games, the British were stronger than the Danes in the final. The bronze medalist of London - the Netherlands national team - also confirmed its status as the third team in the world. Thus, the podium was exactly the same as it was 4 years before.
