Content
Life and work
Born in the American South, in St. Louis , Missouri . He moved to Texas , where from 1923 to 1925 he studied painting at the Dallas Southern Methodist University. Since 1926, the artist lives in New York , here in 1927-1930 he studies at the League of Student Artists .
In 1938 he created murals at the Queens Public Library , in 1942 - at La Guardia Airport in New York. In the period from 1942 to 1945, during the Second World War - 3-year service in the US Armed Forces. Then he lives in Egypt and in Turkey . After returning to his homeland in 1946, he teaches at New York Columbia University , and since 1948, at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn .
In 1952, the artist was awarded the first prize of the "International Exhibition of Artists" at the Carnegie Institution, in Philadelphia .
