Content

Title

The genus is named after the Swedish ( Ingermanlandian ) naturalist Peter Artedi (1705-1735), a friend of Karl Linnaeus . Artedi was a zoologist , one of the founders of ichthyology , but he was also engaged in botany , primarily plants of the Umbrella family.

The species epithet , squamata (from lat. Squama “ scales ”), is explained by the presence of scales on the fruits.

Biological Description

Artedia is an erect grass plant up to sixty centimeters high, found along roads, in meadows, and abandoned fields.

Leaves twice and thrice-perforated, very narrow, less than one centimeter long.

Flowers are collected in complex umbrellas with a diameter of up to ten centimeters, which consist of simple umbrellas . Corollas are white. The outer petals of the marginal flowers are several times enlarged. Central flowers are staminate . Flowering - in March-May.

Pollination is carried out using insects . To attract pollinators in the center of the inflorescence is a black-violet formation in the shape of a small ball; it is an underdeveloped umbrella. Against the background of white petals, it is clearly visible and from afar it seems like a bug or a fly , which may attract other bugs and flies.

Fruits - in small scales.

Classification

In addition to Artedia squamata , Linnaeus also included Artedia muricata in the genus Artedia , but later included it in the genus Daucus ( carrot ): Daucus muricatus ( L. ) L. ( 1762 ) [ syn. Artedia muricata L. ( 1753 ) ]

In 1797, Peter Simon Pallas described the species of plants found in Crimea ; Pallas gave the same name to this species: Artedia squamata Pall. Now this species belongs to the genus Sanicula ( undergrowth ), and the name mentioned is synonymous with the name Sanicula crithmifolia Willd. ( 1801 ) . [2]
