Tan Zhenlin was born in Yuxian ( 攸 ) County, Hunan Province . [2] He joined the Communist Party in 1926 and participated in the Civil War almost from the very beginning in the late 1920s. After the outbreak of war with Japan, he served in the New 4th Army ; after the "incident with the New 4th Army" he became commander of the 6th division of the New 4th Army . By 1949, he had grown to the post of first deputy commissar of the Third Army of the PLA .
After the Civil War, Tan Zhenlin was repeatedly a member of the CPC Central Committee (8th convocation, 1956-1969; 10th convocation, 1973-1977; 11th convocation, 1977-1982). He also served as deputy chairman of the Standing Committee of the All-China Assembly of People's Representatives (4th convocation, 1975-1978; 5th convocation, 1978-1983) [3]
At a meeting of party leaders on February 16, 1967, Tan Zhenlin opposed the excesses of the Cultural Revolution , which, he said, was directed against party veterans. In this he was supported by Marshal Chen Yi and some other prominent communists. The Hongweibins immediately launched a campaign against Tan Zhenlin, which, however, he survived. [four]
