General information
The length of the Ulugur Mountains is more than 50 kilometers. The highest point of the ridge is Mount Gimhandu (2646 m). In the surrounding area there are about 50 villages in which more than 150 thousand people live.
Geography
Uluguru Mountains are located 200 kilometers west of the Indian Ocean , in the Tanzanian province of Morogoro . They stretched from the city of Morogoro in the north to the Selous National Park in the south. In these mountains, the Ruvu River originates, flowing into the Indian Ocean near the city of Bahamoyo .
Nature and climate
The area where the Uluguru Range is located is characterized by a hot and very humid climate, with heavy rains. On the eastern slopes of Ulugur, up to 3000 mm of precipitation falls annually.
The mountains are covered with dense rainforest , which is one of the oldest in East Africa. Here are the habitats of the rarest species of flora and fauna. About 30 species of the animal world and about 200 species of plants are found exclusively in these mountains. Despite the protective measures, the Ulguru relict tropical forest is constantly undergoing criminal felling, which leads to soil erosion , floods and the destruction of the unique natural environment.
