Creativity
Creativity of the master, forgotten after his death, was rediscovered only in the 1940s; The first publication about him was published in 1915.
Georgy Dumenil de Latour's paintings are characterized by a geometrically strict composition and the intensity of religious feeling. Latour's paintings are usually candlelit night scenes painted in the manner of Caravaggio . The artist liked to portray biblical characters in the guise of beggars and peasants, to create compositions whose characters were illuminated by a single source - a candle.
Typical of his work are such works as “The Newborn” ( Museum of Fine Arts in Rennes ), “Adoration of the Shepherds” ( Louvre ), “Martyrdom of St. Sebastian ”( Berlin-Dahlem ),“ The Grieving Magdalene ”( Metropolitan Museum of Art ),“ The Renunciation of the Apostle Peter ”. One of the master’s works - “With the usurer” - is kept in the Lviv Art Gallery . In Russian museums his works are not. Etienne (born 1621), the son of an artist, also became a painter. La Tour's pupil was also his nephew Francois Narduayen, who died of the plague in 1636. Under the influence of the artist's work was an anonymous Candlelight Master .
