Biography
Born in the town of Mtsensk, Oryol Province, in a merchant family. Upon graduation in 1861, with a gold medal from the 1st Moscow Gymnasium, he entered the history and philology department of Moscow University , from which he graduated with a degree in 1865. As a philologist, he was formed under the strong influence of Professor F. I. Buslaev .
Immediately after graduation, he began teaching at the 5th Moscow Gymnasium . Being engaged in pedagogical activity, at the same time he devoted all his leisure to scholarly works, having written many works on language. In 1871, he went abroad to improve education; in 1872 passed the master's exam; in April 1873 he defended his thesis for the title of Master of History of General Literature. The outstanding qualities of the thesis “The Experience of Comparative Study of the Western and Russian Epos: The Poems of the Lombard Cycle”, as well as other works contributed to inviting him to the department of the history of general literature at Kharkov University .
In February 1877 he left the department. In March 1878, he again went abroad and in April 1879 he defended his doctoral thesis “St. George and the Great Brave” at St. Petersburg University , in which he studied the sources of Russian spiritual poems. In the same year he became an extraordinary professor at Kharkov University . At this time he began to participate in the publication of the Universal History of Literature by V.F. Korsch [1] .
From April 1885, he was an ordinary professor at the Novorossiysk University (now the I. Mechnikov Odessa National University ) in Odessa. In 1894 he was elected a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences and settled in Moscow. As a supernumerary ordinary professor at Moscow University , he lectured on the work of Russian writers and on the history of universal literature. In January 1898 he was appointed full-time professor ; in 1899-1902 - Dean of the Faculty of History and Philology. In November 1900, he was awarded the title of Honored Professor of Moscow University .
Moscow Period
The Moscow period was as fruitful as the previous ones. Reissued his "Essays on the history of the new Russian literature," published a number of articles about Pushkin. He wrote a critical biography of Gogol and prepared for publication a critical edition of his writings, participated in the works of archaeological congresses, worked hard on the commission of N. P. Bogolepov, and with all this, found time to help students who turned to him for advice.
In the Rumyantsev Museum, he served as the custodian of antiquities (1898-1902), then a librarian (since 1902). The Archeographic Commission of the Moscow Archaeological Society and the Russian Bibliographic Society of the University considered him its chairman. This influenced his writings, which always occupied the reader with their topic.
In the 1900s, the complete works of N. V. Gogol were published in 3 volumes with a biography and an appendix in the publishing house of I. D. Sytin, edited by A. I. Kirpichnikov. The first volume contains the Experience of the chronological canvas, compiled by A. I. Kirpichnikov. [2]
