Creativity

In the 1980s, Thomas Hirschhorn worked in Paris as a graphic artist. For some time he was a member of the Grapus group. These artists spoke out about politics and culture, exhibiting works on the streets, using mainly the language of advertising. Hirschhorn left Grapus to create the big, rich installations thanks to which he is known today. Using materials such as cardboard, polystyrene, duct tape, dolls, photographs, clippings, objects, Hirschhorn creates objects and images that resemble at the same time a horror movie, reportage and advertising. The artist is interested in contradictions, especially in the system of art and politics. Hirschhorn’s work is influenced by the “social sculptures” of Boyce and the growing collages of Anna Oppermann . The artist’s installations often leave the walls of the galleries and go outside. He received the Marcel Duchamp Award in 2000 and the Joseph Beuys Prize in 2004. His works are in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, Walker Art Center, Tate Gallery.
