Biography

Glaser was the fifth of seven children in a Jewish family. He inherited the jewelry business of his father [1] . By this time, he had only $ 300 in his account. Five years later, he began to invest in other businesses.

In the 1970s, he acquired several trailer parks (mobile homes), mainly in Florida. He became president and CEO of First Allied Corporation [2] , an American holding company that includes a variety of businesses (food, seafood, healthcare, real estate, energy exploration, broadcasting).

To date, Malcolm Glaser has lived in Palm Beach , Florida with his wife Linda. He has five sons (Abram, Kevin, Brian, Joel and Edward) and one daughter, Darcy [3] . Three of his sons (Joel, Brian and Edward) are vice presidents at First Allied. Malcolm ran an extensive business empire, which included shopping centers and nursing homes.

On April 16, 2006, Glaser suffered a stroke, after which he developed a speech disorder and lost mobility of his right arm and leg [4] . His son Joel said on this occasion: "My father is in a good mood, and doctors expect him to feel better during the rehabilitation process." However, in May of that year, Glaser suffered a second stroke [5] . After that, he lived another eight years and died on May 28, 2014 in Rochester [6] .

Sports Team Ownership

Manchester United

From 2003 to 2005, Glazer bought up shares of the Premier League football club Manchester United , gradually increasing its stake, and eventually became the owner of a controlling stake, spending about $ 1.47 billion on it. The capture of the club by Glazer met fierce resistance from many United fans [7] who organized the independent Manchester United Fans Trust . The fans ’protest was caused by concern over the club’s huge debt (more than $ 850 million) and the high interest that the club should pay on it (about £ 60 million per year), as well as the conviction of many fans that the club should belong to them, not businessmen . Many fans protested the increase in ticket prices for home matches of the team.

In protest against the capture of the club by Glaser, thousands of fans refused to update their seasonal season tickets. Many of them got together and organized a new football club called United of Manchester . This club is quite successful in the lower divisions of the English championship , and its matches attract about 2 thousand fans every week (the record attendance of the club’s match was 6023 people) [8] .
