History

The club was founded by students of the local lyceum. The name " Hellas " (Italians pronounce Hellas ) for the team was chosen by a Greek teacher. In 1911, Ellas took part in the championship of the region. In 1919, the club changed its name to Ellas Verona. In Serie B of the Italian Championship, the club made its debut in 1929, teaming up with other amateur teams in the province of Verona - “Bentegodi” and “Scaligera”. According to the results of the 1956/1957 season, the team received the right to enter Serie A , holding there for only one year.

In 1968, Hellas Verona returned to the top division of the Italian championship. In series A, the team came out under the guidance of the notorious Swedish specialist Nils Liedholm . The club finished the 1982/1983 season in a record fourth place for itself, and two years later the team celebrated the championship.

In 1990, Ellas Verona left the elite division. Then the team began to have serious financial difficulties that prevented it from showing stable results. In subsequent years, the club balanced between series A, B and C1, regularly selling their leaders.

Scudetto 1985

The replenishment in the person of Hans-Peter Brigel in the midfield and the Danish striker Preben Elkjaer for the attack, which already had a sharp edge of midfield Pietro Fannu , the ability of Antonio Di Gennaro and the goalie flair of Giuseppe Galderisi played a decisive role.

Particularly memorable milestones on the road to the Scudetto: a victory over Juventus (2: 0), thanks to a goal scored by Elkjaer, who lost a boot, a victory over Udinese (5: 3), which refuted any assumptions that the team should have lost forces halfway, and a 1-1 draw in Bergamo against Atalanta , thanks to which Verona won the championship for the first time in its history.

Ellas Verona ended the year with 15 wins, with 13 draws and two losses with 43 points in the asset, 4 points ahead of Juventus and Internazionale .

Principal rivals
