Virginia Cherrill ( born Virginia Cherrill , April 12, 1908 - November 14, 1996 ) is an American actress best known for her role as a blind flower girl in Charlie Chaplin ’s film “ City Lights ”.

Biography
Virginia was born on a farm near Carthage in Illinois in the family of James E. Cherrill and his wife Blanche Wilcox. Growing up, she moved to Hollywood , where she met Charlie Chaplin at a boxing match. She liked Chaplin, and he approved her for the role of a blind flower girl in his film “ City Lights ” (1931). But their relationship during the filming was not simple. Chaplin even kicked Virginia out after a few days of filming and decided to replace her with Georgia Hale . But in the end, fearing the high costs of reshaping, Chaplin returned it.
She later appeared in several more films, including Charlie Chan's Big Affair in 1933, but in 1936 left her film career.
Virginia got married four times. Her second husband was actor Carey Grant (1934-1935), and the third was George Child Willers, 9th Earl of Jersey (1937-1946), after her marriage with which she received the title of Countess. In 1948, she married Florian Martini, with whom she lived all her subsequent life in Santa Barbara , where she died of a stroke on November 14, 1996 at the age of 88.
Virginia Cherrill is the owner of a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame .
