History

By the resolution of the Presidium of the Kabardino-Balkarian Regional Executive Committee of February 23, 1924, the Nagorno okrug was formed [4] . By the decree of the All-Russian Central Executive Committee of September 30, 1931, the Nagorny District was transformed into the Nagorny District . Until 1932, the administrative center of the district was the city of Pyatigorsk , which was not part of the district.

By a decree of the Presidium of the All-Russian Central Executive Committee on December 29, 1937, the Nagorny District was disaggregated, and the Malkinsky District was formed from the Zalukokoazhsky, Zolsky, Malkinsky, Brunental, Svetlovodsky, Psynadakhsky, Batekhsky, Kamlyuksky, Shardakovsky and Zalukodessky Village Councils [5] [6] .

By a resolution of the Presidium of the Supreme Council of the Kabardian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic of December 23, 1938 ( approved on March 2, 1939 ), the Malkinsky district was renamed Zolsky ( with a center in the village of Zolskoye ).

By a resolution of the Presidium of the Supreme Council of the Kabardian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic of September 18, 1956 and a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Council of the RSFSR of November 2, 1956, the Nagorny District was abolished, and its territory was transferred to the Zolsky District .

By a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Council of the KBASSR dated December 20, 1962, the Zolsky district was transformed into the Zolsky rural district within the same borders. By a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Council of the KBASSR dated January 12, 1965, it was again transformed into the Zolsky district.

In 2005, local administrations were abolished in the district and 16 municipalities were established with the status of urban and rural settlements.
