Margaret Sallavan ( born Margaret Sullavan ; May 16, 1909 - January 1, 1960 ) is an American actress known for her roles in the films “Three Comrades” (1938) and “Shop Around the Corner” (1940). Nominee for the Oscar 1939.

Biography

Margaret Brooke Sallavan was born on May 16, 1909 in the family of a rich broker Cornelius Sallavan and his wife Garland Brooke.

The first years of her life the girl suffered from painful muscular weakness in her legs and, until she was six, she did not communicate with other children. After recovery, preferred society of children from poor families.

She studied Margaret in college for girls Chetm Hill. She was president of student government. At the release in 1927, she was instructed to deliver a speech of thanks. Soon she moved to Boston to her half-sister, Widdy. They attended the famous dance studio Denishawn , which was graduated from such celebrities as Louise Brooks and Martha Graham . When her parents cut her content to a minimum, Margaret got a job as a clerk at the Harvard Cooperative Bookstor .

Her career began on the theater stage in 1929. In 1933, she attracted the attention of director John M. Stahl, who in the same year offered her a debut role in his film “Yesterday”.

In 1938, she was nominated for an Oscar for her role in the film Three Comrades. Her film career continued until 1943 and during that time she starred in 16 films. After that, she appeared on the big screen only once in 1950, playing her last role, Mary Scott, in the movie “Don't Sing Me Sad Songs.” In subsequent years, her acting career continued only in the theater.

Sallavan was married four times. Her first husband was Henry Fonda , and the second was William Wyler . The actress died on January 1, 1960, taking a large dose of barbiturates . For her contribution to cinema, she was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame .
