Story
In the story, “A Guide to Hunting and Fishing for Girls,” Jane Rosenthal, the protagonist of the stories, cannot find a permanent friend. During a trip to get a wedding dress, her friend talks about a “terrible” book she reads, “How to Meet and Marry the Right Man.” At the wedding, Jane meets and falls in love with Robert, who seems to sympathize with her too. Waiting for his call, she decides to buy this book and apply the advice. They work for a while, but soon Robert begins to lose interest. She decides to find out everything, it turns out that he was in love with her until she began to play games [2] .
In the first Advanced Beginners story, Jane is the 14-year-old sister of a 20-year-old brother who meets a 28-year-old girl. At Levitating House, she gets older and meets up with boyfriend Jamie. During a meeting with ex-girlfriend Jamie and her husband, Jane realizes that marriage does not necessarily stop flirting with others. In the two longest stories, “My Old Man” and “The Worst Suburban Girl Can Imagine,” Jane recalls her long and difficult relationship with a man older than her. Jane’s father dies of leukemia, she loses her job and her relationship [2] .
