Build
Built by the Kherson Shipbuilding Plant of the Ministry of Construction of the USSR, it is the final seventeenth vessel of the Amguem type (and the fifth of the series built by this plant, the head ship Kapitan Myshevsky ), approved by the Ministry of Industry and Industry in project No. 550 in January 1956 .
The scientific and expeditionary vessel was laid down on October 10, 1974 by order of the State Committee for Hydrometeorology and Hydrology of the USSR. Launched on February 28, 1975 . The raising of the State flag of the USSR on Mikhail Somov took place on July 8, 1975 . This day is considered the birthday of the ship. It was transferred to the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute under the command of Captain M.E. Mikhailov on July 30, 1975 . On September 2 of the same year, Mikhail Somov went on its first flight.
Vessel History
Mikhail Somov participated in twenty-one Soviet and Russian Antarctic expeditions. More than a dozen flights from AANII for the transportation of goods, including to the Arctic, have been completed.
1977 Antarctic Drift
In 1977, Mikhail Somov performed an operation to supply and change personnel for the Leningradskaya Antarctic station . February 1, 1977 at 68 ° 20 'S W, 162 ° 32 'in. The village of Mikhail Somov entered the band of 8-10-point ice. When about 30 miles (about 55 km) remained before going out to the ice-hole near the station, the weather conditions suddenly worsened. Due to a strong snowstorm, the ship went into drift and for three days the prevailing southeast wind, along with ice fields, was demolished 56 miles (about 103 km) to the west. The ice around the ship was tightened, shaken , and it could not move actively.
February 6, 1977 at 68 ° 33 'S W, 158 ° 05 'in. The drift of "Mikhail Somov" in the ice of the Ballensky ice massif began.
In the period from February 19 to March 2, 1977, the personnel of the Leningradskaya station was changed at a distance of 200 km. The station was provided with fuel, food and other cargo.
At the end of March, ice conditions began to improve. On March 28, "Mikhail Somov" managed to turn around in a narrow crack and began to make its way east. March 29, 1977, breaking the jumper of heavy agitated ice at 66 ° 40 'S. W, 152 ° 06 'in. D., the vessel reached the northern periphery of the Ballensky ice massif.
The "Mikhail Somov" drift lasted 53 days, during which time the ship drifted about 250 miles. [one]
1985 Antarctic Drift
On March 15, 1985, while securing the Russkaya station , Mikhail Somov (captain V. F. Rodchenko ) was caught in heavy ice and was forced to drift off the coast of Antarctica off the Hobs Coast . From the drifting ship, Mi-8 helicopters evacuated 77 expedition members and crew members to the Pavel Korchagin motor ship. This operation was completed on April 17, 1985.
An icebreaker Vladivostok was sent to rescue Mikhail Somov. On July 26, 1985, the icebreaker chipped the ice around Mikhail Somov, and on August 11 both ships set sail.
In the drift "Mikhail Somov" was 133 days. [one]
1991 Antarctic Drift
On May 4, 1991, Mikhail Somov (captain F. A. Pesyakov) was urgently sent to Molodezhnaya station to evacuate more than 150 polar explorers. Through heavy ice Mikhail Somov made his way to the area of Molodezhnaya station and on July 9, 1991, the evacuation of polar explorers on board the ship was completed. On the contrary, “Mikhail Somov” could not go out and was sandwiched with ice.
During August 19 and 20, 1991, during polar night, polar explorers and 15 crew members were taken by helicopters back to Molodezhnaya station . Moreover, the exact determination of the coordinates of the vessel under the conditions of the Antarctic polar night was achieved through the use of a space -based radar with a synthesized aperture installed on the Almaz-1A satellite [2] .
On August 22, 1991, more than 190 polar explorers were taken out of the station by Il-76MD aircraft (commander Hero of the Soviet Union S. G. Bliznyuk ) [3] .
The ice drift of the ship continued until December 28, 1991. [four]
Current status
On May 1, 2000, the R / V Mikhail Somov was transferred to the Northern UGMS. After factory repairs in the same year, the vessel completed two voyages within the framework of the Arctic 2000 project and for the delivery of goods to polar stations, frontier posts, oil industry workers, and military organizations in the western sector of the Arctic.
In 2001-2002 , the ship completed seven voyages for research purposes and for the delivery of goods to high latitudes. In 2003, a scientific voyage took place as part of the Pechora-Shtokman 2003 program and two “supply” trips to the Arctic.
In 2006, the R / V “Mikhail Somov” completed one scientific flight and three supply flights for the delivery of goods to polar stations, frontier posts, radio navigation stations, and military installations of the Russian Arctic.
As of August 2016, the ship Mikhail Somov is in operation at the Northern Interregional Territorial Administration of the Federal Service for Hydrometeorology and Environmental Monitoring . It is used to supply Russian scientific expeditions in the Arctic, to deliver personnel, equipment and supplies to scientific stations, border outposts and other objects, as well as to conduct scientific research of Arctic ice.
Ship Rewards
In 1985, Mikhail Somov was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor for the heroic drift in the ice of Antarctica and the successful liberation from ice captivity.
The ship's captain Valentin Filippovich Rodchenko was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union , many crew members were awarded government awards.
