Lancashire

Lancashire ( Eng. Lancashire , / ˈlæŋkəˌʃə / or / ˈlæŋkəˌʃɪə / ) is a ceremonial non-metropolitan county in North West England on the shores of the Irish Sea . The capital and largest city is Preston . The population is 1.168 million people (4th among counties; 2007 estimate). It is part of the Duchy of Lancashire , which since 1413 belongs to the British monarchs and is a source of their personal income.

It is irrigated by the rivers Daddon ( Eng. ), Lune , Wyre , Ribble , Mercy and Irwell .

The climate is temperate but very damp.

Agriculture and livestock farming are negligible. Copper, iron, coal , which lies in the space of 562 km²; in 1892, more than 22 million tons of coal were mined. Lancashire is predominantly a cotton county; the center of this industry, which occupies up to 2,000 factories, is Manchester , the main point of the county vacation trade is Liverpool . A whole network of railways and canals. There are also wool, linen, hosiery, paper, chemical, machine-building factories, and many others; shipbuilding is also significant.
