Archbishop Euthymius I ( Emelian Bradaty [1] in the world; d. November 1, 1429 , Novgorod ) - bishop of the Russian Church , archbishop of Novgorod and Pskov .
Biography
The nickname Bradaty received because of the large chin [1] . Before being elected to the Novgorod department, he was a hieromonk of the Novgorod Derevyanitsky monastery , confessor of Archbishop Simeon [1] .
He was elected to the archbishop's pulpit by lot, erected " on the canopy of Sofia " on August 30, 1423, replacing Vladyka Theodosius , who was deposed by Novgorodians, and was named Euthymius during his formation. [1] .
In September 1424 in Moscow [1] he was consecrated bishop of Novgorod and Pskov, elevated to the rank of archbishop .
Known for the construction of churches (in 1424-1427 the Church of the Savior the Merciful was built in the Novgorod Kremlin behind the altar of St. Sophia Cathedral ).
The Novgorod archbishop had to carry out important diplomatic functions.
At the direction of Euthymius, the March Minea was written. His Confession of Faith (1424) and a letter to the Pskov clergy ( 1426 ) are also known. In 1428, he headed the embassy in negotiations with the Lithuanian Grand Duke Vitovt , held near Porkhov [1] .
He died on November 1, 1429, was buried in the Derevyanitsky monastery.
