He began his racing career in Ireland, later moved to England, where he spoke at Formula Ford in the early 1970s, moved to Formula 3 in 1973, and finished third in the Formula 3 race in Monaco . In 1975, he started at Formula Ford, the North American Formula Atlantic and the British Formula 5000. At the Swedish Grand Prix of the World Championship Formula 1 he replaced Arturo Merzario in the Williams team and finished 14th in the race. with two lags behind the winner.
