Design History
In accordance with the Treaty of Versailles , Germany was forbidden to have submarines, the design and manufacture of them in Germany should have been discontinued. Temporarily left without orders after the First World War , many German submarine designers and structural engineers were forced to develop project documentation and provide technical support for the Finnish fleet. The first project of German experts was the small submarine Saukko. It was designed and built for operations in the Baltic against the Soviet fleet . Armed with a torpedo project, the boat had the ability to install sea mines .
Design
The boat could be disassembled into two parts for transportation by rail . In addition, since under the terms of the Tartu Peace Treaty , the displacement of any warship in Ladoga should not exceed 100 tons, its design surface displacement was limited to 99 tons, which made it the smallest of the full-fledged submarines of its time.
Construction
The boat was built in 1928 - 1930 at the Sandvikens Skeppsdocka och Mekaniska Verkstad shipyard , and in the mid -1930s it underwent modernization, which consisted primarily of replacing an unsuccessful diesel engine .
Service History
Since its actual displacement, especially after modernization, exceeded the limit, Saukko was never used on Lake Ladoga and during the Second World War it served in the Gulf of Finland . In accordance with the terms of the Paris Peace Treaty , which prohibited Finland from having submarines in service, it was withdrawn from service in 1947 and scrapped.
