Biography
Born on March 15, 1923 in the village of Ozhenkovka, Yekaterinoslav Province of the Ukrainian SSR (now Pavlogradsky District , Dnipropetrovsk Oblast , Ukraine ) in a peasant family. Ukrainian . He graduated from 7 classes. He worked as a tractor driver at the state farm of the Crimean region of the RSFSR .
In the Red Army since 1940 . On the front in the Great Patriotic War from August 1941. Wounded captured . Ran away. From March 1944 - again at the front.
The shooter of the 844th rifle regiment ( 267th rifle division , 51st army , 4th Ukrainian front ), Red Army soldier Ivan Yatsunenko, in a battle on May 7, 1944 near Sevastopol, was one of the first to break into Sapun mountain , located southeast of Sevastopol, in tactical terms, a key position on the approaches to the city. Almost at the very top, he received the Red Flag from the weakening hands of the party organizer of the company of senior sergeant Yevgeny Smelovich, who was hit by a bullet, and at the same time he heard a surprisingly familiar voice from behind: “That's right, son! Carry on. "
Looking back, Ivan Yatsunenko saw his own father Karp Alekseevich Yatsunenko. But at that moment the enemy mine exploded, and Yatsunenko Sr. fell next to the party organizer.
The Red Army soldier Yatsunenko, IK, at the same time with the soldiers Drybyasko and Babazhanov, raised the Assault Banner on the top of Sapun Mountain, and then received a heavy wound and ended up in the hospital.
The father and son of Yatsunenko, wounded at Sapun-gore, defeated death, their battle-way further passed through Romania to Austria, where they celebrated the bright feast of Victory over Nazi Germany.
In 1946, IK Yatsunenko was demobilized. He worked as a driver in the village of Spacious Dzhankoysky district ( Crimea ). For a long time he was considered dead, and his name was carved on a granite monument to the fallen heroes of the assault on Sapun Mountain.
By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR dated June 4, 1954, for exemplary performance of combat missions of command on the front of the struggle against the German fascist invaders and the courage and heroism shown to Red Army soldier Yatsunenko Ivan Karpovich awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union with the award of the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star medal (No. 10816).
He lived in Sevastopol . He died on February 10, 1983. He was buried in the cemetery of the village Dergachi in Sevastopol [3] .

The feat of I.K. Yatsunenko was captured on the pictorial canvas of the “Storm of Sapun Mountain” diorama , written by a team of artists from the Grekov Military Studio of Artists, under the direction of P. T. Maltsev, which is installed in the memorial museum on Sapun Mountain .
