Biography
He spent his childhood in Iran , where his father worked, and then in the Himalayas , where his father sent him to study. He studied at the Bishop Cotton School in Shimla , then at the University of Delhi . At 24, he moved to the USA , which the director himself recalled as follows [2] :
| In India, I saw a book called "Guide to the film schools of America" and was simply stunned by it. She changed my life, because before that I thought that you need to go to college in order to study something that your father loves, and you yourself hate. I told my father that I wanted to study cinema, and he replied that he would never allow me to do this. But I went to Los Angeles and made a film, thanks to which I received a scholarship to the college of art. Father thought I was going to Harvard. When I called him and said that I would study cinema, he replied: "You no longer exist for me." |
Tarsem graduated from art college in the California city of Pasadena . He began his career as a filmmaker in the 1990s. Among his most famous videos are Hold On ( En Vogue ), Sweet Lullaby ( Deep Forest ) and others. The most successful was the video for REM's Losing My Religion , which won six nominations at the 1991 MTV Video Music Awards . According to the director, the style of this clip was largely influenced by the images of Caravaggio's paintings and Tarkovsky's films.
Then Tarsem turned to advertising (which he is filming now). In total, he has scored dozens of commercials for such well-known brands as Nike , Coca-Cola , Pepsi , Motorola , Levi's and others. [3]
The debut as a film director was the full-length film "The Cage " in 2000 with Jennifer Lopez in the title role; in this film, which tells about the journey of a female psychologist through the subconscious of a serial killer, the style of the video clip Losing My Religion was partially used.
For several years, Tarsem made his second film, Outland , first shown at the Toronto Festival in September 2006 ; only in 2008 it was released on DVD and went on limited release in several countries. Here he also acted as a screenwriter and producer in order to fully realize his vision of the film (the work on which he began 17 years ago). At the same time, the plot was based on the script by Valery Petrov for the Bulgarian film " Yo-ho-ho " ( 1981 ) directed by Zako Hesky . "Outland" was filmed in 24 countries [4] .
He was one of the candidates for directing the film " Constantine: Lord of Darkness " ( 2005 ). He acted as the director of the second group on the set of scenes in India and Cambodia for the film "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button " ( 2008 ) [5] .
Tarsem’s third feature film was War of the Gods: Immortals , according to ancient Greek myths about Theseus’s exploits; where Tarsem turned to trendy 3D technology. The film premiered in November 2011 .
Currently, the director lives in London and Los Angeles .
