History
Ground
English Catholic settlers arrived in America in 1634, mainly settling in the territory of the then Maryland colony. The defeat of the royalists in the English Civil War (1646) led to the adoption of anti-Catholic legislation in the colony, the expulsion of well-known Jesuits from its territory and the destruction of their school. During most of the colonial period, the Jesuits were forced to conduct classes in Catholic schools illegally. The lifting of the ban on Jesuit education in 1776 (after the start of the American Revolution ) allowed Catholics to create an educational institution on a permanent basis.
On the recommendation of Benjamin Franklin, Pope Pius VI appointed the former Jesuit John Carroll as head of the Roman Catholic Church in America. In 1783, Carroll began meeting with local clergy in the Annapolis settlement (Maryland colony), where they began preparations for the organization of a new university. In 1789, Carroll acquired the necessary territory for the university. Future Congressman William Gaston became the first student at Georgetown University, who began work in early 1792.
Development
In 1851, the Georgetown University School of Medicine was founded, which also included a medical school in 1903.

The Georgetown University School of Diplomacy (SFS) is the leading educational institution for training diplomats in the United States (opened in 1919 by E. Walsham). Georgetown School of Business was founded in 1957, and in 1998 was named after MacDon.
