Kofman, Roman Isaakovich

Roman Isaakovich Kofman (born June 15, 1936 , Kiev ) is a Ukrainian conductor , composer, poet, writer. Honored Artist of Ukraine (1994) [1] . People's Artist of Ukraine ( 2003 ) [2] .

Biography

He studied in Novosibirsk under Joseph Aronovich Gutman (among his students also Eduard Grach and Victor Pikaisen ), then at the Gorky Conservatory under Vitold Portugalov . He graduated from the Kiev Conservatory as a violinist (1961), since 1963 - accompanist of the Kiev Chamber Orchestra . Then he received a second, conducting education (1971) under the direction of Mikhail Kanerstein .

Since 1978, professor at the National Music Academy of Ukraine, head of the student’s orchestra. In 1990, he headed the Kiev Chamber Orchestra. According to Kofman himself,

I was the first in Ukraine to organize an author's concert by Alfred Schnittke , the first complete author's concert by Gia Kancheli , and besides, it was the first author's concert in his life. I was the first performer of Silvestrov , after which I was invited to the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Ukraine, but I, insolently, replied that I was not a party member and no one had the right to call me [3] .

In 2003-2008, he worked in Germany as general director of Bonn , heading the Beethoven Orchestra and the Bonn Opera . With this orchestra, he recorded the Liszt oratorio “Christ” ( Echo-Classic award) and all Shostakovich symphonies. At the Bonn Opera he performed 10 operas, including the rare in Europe " Sorochinsky Fair " by Mussorgsky . For his work in Bonn, he was awarded the First Class Big Cross (Officer's Cross) of the Order of Merit to the Federal Republic of Germany [4] .

Continuing to work in Ukraine with various orchestras, he presented in Kiev concert programs “All Beethoven Symphonies” (season 2006/07) [5] and “All Franz Schubert Symphonies” (season 2008/2009 ) [6] , while performing works new generations of Ukrainian composers [7] Regarding Kofman’s programs, the critic notes:

Building the composition of his programs, the conductor builds on literature rather than music. And in any neighborhood of musical works he can find his own special rhyme and poetry [8] .

Since 2012 - chief conductor of the Symphony Orchestra of the National Philharmonic of Ukraine.

He is the author of the book “Nuances” (Poems. Prose. Dramaturgy, 1993), “The Face of the Earth” (Poetry, 1996), “The Book of Nothingness” (2004), “Education of the Conductor. Psychological Features ”(2009),“ 100 Unnecessary Advice to Young Conductors ”(2012),“ Pastoral Symphony, or How I Lived Under the Germans ”(K .: Duh i Litera, 2011),“ It Will Always Be That ”(Laurus, 2014) Praise Employers (Laurus, 2015). Wrote a series of songs "The Seven-Colored Country" to the verses of Hovsei Dryz .

Author of music for the films “Only Three Weeks” (1971) and “Laurels” (1972, co-author).

Wife - Irina Nikolaevna Sablina, over the years led the Kiev children's choir , laureate of Ukrainian and international competitions. Currently, this team is led by their daughter Marianna Sablina.
