Biography

Nikolai Frederic Severin Grundtvig was born on September 8, 1783 in the family of a pastor. He graduated from the University of Copenhagen , where he specialized in the study of the Icelandic language . He published several volumes of original poems, a Danish translation of the Anglo-Saxon epic Beowulf ( 1820 , the first of Beowulf translations into the modern language), a number of books on world history, philological studies of Old Norse literature, and sharp articles on religious and church issues.

He was a priest, and since 1861 a bishop (the actual head of the Lutherans of Denmark). In 1850 - 1858 He was a member of the Danish parliament, and in 1866 , in the midst of an acute civil crisis after the defeat of Denmark in the war with Prussia, he returned to parliament and led the left opposition.

The works and sermons of Grundtvig, starting in the 1840s, laid the foundations of modern Danish national self-awareness: they, in particular, address the problem of national pride of a small nation, the viability and success of the state is directly dependent on the happiness and prosperity of its citizens.

Grundtvig was the initiator of the creation of the so-called "people's universities" - adult schools, where you could get education in many fields of knowledge. This contributed to a further increase in the level of culture of the entire population of the country. In the field of adult education, Denmark became a model, which was then followed by other European states [8] .

Among the four most famous Danish spiritual songwriters ( Thomas Hansen Kingo , Hans Adolf Borson , Nikolai Frederic Severin Grundtvig and Bernhard Severin Ingemann ), he takes a very honorable place according to ESB [9] .
