Bemolanga is a large deposit of tar sands in the northwest of Madagascar about 120 km from the coast. The area of Bemolangi is 7175 km².
Exploration drilling was carried out in the 1950s and 1980s.
Bemolanga oil contains sulfur up to 1%, there is a low content of vanadium . The productive oil horizon is represented by sandstone. Its thickness is about 30 m, and the roof lies at a depth of 0-30 m.
According to DeGolyer & MacNaughton, geological reserves in the 2P + 3P category are 16.6 billion barrels or 2.6 billion tons of oil.
The project operator is the American oil company Madagascar Oil .
