History

The Saratov Planetarium was opened on May 23, 1948 with the support of the All-Union Astronomical and Geodesic Society, chaired by Associate Professor of SSU Pavel Vasilyevich Vyuzhkov. It is located on Chernyshevsky Square in the building of the “ Satisfy My Sorrows ” church, in which a dome with a diameter of 6 meters was installed. The Soviet demonstration unit UP-4 was installed in this dome. The dome and apparatus were mounted by P.V. Vzhzhkov and his students, who became the first planetarium lecturers.

In the late 1950s. The Saratov planetarium was transferred to the department of the society "Knowledge" of Russia. 1970s marked by the acquisition for the planetarium of the Karl Zeiss projection apparatus and a small telescope . The hall was also reconstructed, which was now designed not for 50, but for 80 people. In 1976, Alexei Efimovich Mozgovoy became the director of the planetarium, who raised the level of work of the planetarium. With him, the volume of lectures expanded, their subject matter became more diverse.

In 1991, the planetarium building was returned to the Saratov diocese, and then the construction of the House of Knowledge on Chernyshevsky Street began, where the Saratov planetarium moved. He resumed his work in 1994 with a hall that can hold up to 160 seats and a dome of 10 meters. The planetarium received a new projection apparatus from Karl Zeiss Jena, whose base had images of 5,800 stars of the northern and southern skies of the Earth.

The period 1994-2002 was difficult for the Saratov planetarium due to lack of funding.

A new period of planetarium activity began in 2002, when new Kodak slide projectors, computers, a multimedia projector were purchased, which made it possible to raise the quality of planetarium programs and increase their number to 70 (for adults and children). These programs include, for example, “Birthday Day under a Starry Sky”, “Stars for Lovers”, theatrical performances, children's New Year's holidays, and optical theater performances.

Saratov Planetarium collaborates with the Association of Planetariums of Russia. The director of the planetarium is Viktor Alkhov.
