Scheduled shootings were delayed in 2007 by John Goodman . The following summer, Schlendorff was fired. Zenke Wortmann was replaced by him as a director, and shortly afterwards, in May 2008, the leading woman, Frank Potente, was replaced by Johanna Vokalek [4] .

The filming began in early August 2008 in Burg-Querfurt in Saxony-Anhalt , Germany . Other filming locations were the Landesschule Pforta Monastery and the Church of St. Siriac in Gernrode , and the scenes in Rome were filmed in Ouarzazate , Morocco . The main shootings were completed in 2008 in Germany and Morocco [5] .

Perception

The Guardian noted the appearance of the film in the top 10 of the Italian box office and wrote about the criticism of the film by the Vatican , and the newspaper of the Italian Episcopal Conference L'Avvenire described it as an “extremely limited vision” [6] .
