Mythology

Caves on the coast of Matala

According to Greek mythology, Matala was the place where Zeus in the form of a bull transported the Phoenician princess Europe . Then he turned into an eagle and transferred it further to Gortyna .

History

In the Neolithic era, numerous caves were hollowed out in the soft, porous rocks of the bay, which were used for burials by the time of the Roman conquest of Crete and during the period of early Christianity. To date, caves are the object of pilgrimage for tourists. In the Minoan period in Matala, apparently, was the port of Festa , located 10 kilometers northeast; in the Roman period, Matala was the port of Gortyna , located 30 kilometers northeast [3] . Arab conquerors led by Umar Abu Hafs landed on Crete in 824 in the area of Matala.

In the 1960s, hippie groups from many countries of the world settled in Neolithic caves, including young Americans who refused to participate in the Vietnam War. At one time, Kat Stevens , Bob Dylan, and Joni Mitchell lived in the caves. Subsequently, Mitchell wrote the song “Carey”, which was included in the album “ Blue ”, about the cafe she met in Matala, whom she met when he flew out onto the street near her from a gas stove explosion [4] . After one of the caves collapsed and a person died in it, the hippies were expelled from the caves. Currently, the caves are fenced, but tourists can visit them.

South of Matala is the nudist beach “Red Beach”.
