As of January 1, 2018, in terms of population, the city was at 1016 out of 1,113 [13] cities of the Russian Federation [14] .
History
The city grew out of a village founded in 1901 at Novosokolniki station (opened in 1901) in connection with the construction of the Moscow-Windau-Rybinsk railway . The name of the village and the station is given by the town of Sokolniki , located 10 km from the present city, on the territory of the Vitebsk province; the station was located on the horse-drawn road from Velikiy Luki to Sokolniki.
By a decree of the Central Executive Committee of June 6, 1925, the Novosokolniki received city status [15] .
July 25, 1941 occupied by the Nazi troops. The city was not succeeded in liberating during the Velikie Luki offensive in November 1942 - January 1943. Released on January 29, 1944, by units of the 178th Infantry Kulaginsky Red Banner Division (commander - Major General A. L. Kronik ), operating as part of the 22nd Army of the 2nd Baltic Front during the Leningrad-Novgorod Strategic Offensive Operation (in battles about 11 thousand Soviet soldiers). On the same day, by order of the Supreme Command, the troops that participated in the release of Novosokolnikov were thanked, and in Moscow they saluted 12 artillery volleys from 124 guns [16] [17] [18] .
Economy
There are gravel plant, bakery. There are carriage (ICP-24) and locomotive depot of the October railway . In the area - deposits of peat , gravel , sand, refractory clay.

Not far from the city, in the village of Novoe - the wooden church of Our Lady of Kiev-Pechersk (end of the 19th century). In the Vyazov volost there is a mound and the earthen fortress Ostry (XII-XIII centuries).
