Irena Shevinska (performed under the maiden name Kirshenstein , then under the double Kirshenstein-Shevinska ( Polish. Szewińska-Kirszenstein ); May 24, 1946 , Leningrad , USSR - June 29, 2018 , Warsaw , Poland ) - Polish athlete , specialized in short and long sprints , long jump. Three-time Olympic champion and five-time European champion. 4 times recognized as the best athlete in Poland (among men and women) - 1965, 1966, 1974, 1976.

Biography

Her father, Jakub Gustav Kirshenstein (1919-2002) [5] , a native of Warsaw, was an acoustic engineer, professor at the University of Gothenburg , author of scientific works and monographs on acoustics [6] , chess player [7] ; mother - Evgenia Lvovna Rafalskaya (1922-1996) - came from Kiev . Parents met in an evacuation in Samarkand .

In 1967, she married the athlete Slavomir (Janusz) Shevinsky (born 1941).

In 1981, she was included in the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame .

After the end of her sports career, Irena Shevinsky took up scientific activities. She graduated from the University of Warsaw and was awarded a master's degree in economics. Member of the IOC since 1998 . Member of the IAAF Executive Committee. She regularly participated in major athletics competitions as a representative of the IAAF, including award ceremonies.

Poland’s current record holder at a distance of 400 meters (49.28 seconds), the achievement was set in the winning final of the Montreal Olympic Games on July 29, 1976 . At a distance of 50 meters in enclosed spaces, she held the Polish record for almost 40 years in 1972-2011 (6.39 seconds).

November 3, 2016 was awarded the Japanese Order of the Rising Sun of the 3rd class [8] [9] .

In 2017, she was included in the list of “8 most famous women of Poland” [10] .

Son - Andrzej Shevinsky (born 1970), Polish volleyball player and politician.
