Burnous

Algerian in Burnus

Burnus ( Arabic (البرن , Al'burnus , FR. Burnous ) - a very wide, spacious male or female raincoat with a hood made of cloth or thin felt [1] , originally light tones, ornamented with braid, cords and appliques in oriental style.

Initially, the burnus was distributed among the Berbers of North Africa, from there it penetrated into Europe during the Crusades . The Burnus were part of the uniform of the soldiers of the French colonial army - spag . In Russia, the burnus was first mentioned in 1831. By the 1850s, black burnus came into fashion. In tribute to the Arabian origin, the Burnus models were called ali-baba and alhambra [2] . In the play of A. N. Ostrovsky, “ Shine, but not warm, ” 1881, there is an allusion to the large size of the burnus - the expression “It means to make a burnus from a hat” [3] .
