Biography
From the family of a sales clerk. After leaving school in 1945 - 1949 he studied and worked as a carpenter. At this time, he joined the Anti-Fascist Youth Committee.
Since 1946, he is a member of the Free German Youth Union. For some time he worked as the head of the economic department in a pioneer camp.
On October 27, 1949, Goldbach enters the GDR People’s Police (Barracks Police Duty, Grossenhain ( German: Kasernierte Polizeibereitschaft Großenhain ).
In 1950, Goldbach became a member of the SED .
In 1950 - 1951 he completed a training course at the tank officer school of the Main Directorate of Combat Training, Non-Commissioner.
In 1952, Goldbach - platoon commander and teacher in the same school of the KNP.
In 1952 - 1956 he was sent to study at the Military Academy in the USSR . After returning, received the rank of major.
In 1956 - 1960, Goldbach first served as first deputy commander, then chief of staff and deputy commander of the 7th Panzer Division in Dresden, Franz Rös .
From November 1, 1960 to July 31, 1964, he, with the rank of colonel, commands this division.
In 1964 - 1966, Goldbach studied at the Military Academy of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the USSR . After his return to the GDR as a certified military specialist, from October 1, 1966 to August 31, 1969, he commanded the 4th MSD ( Erfurt ).
October 7, 1966 he was awarded the title of Major General.
From November 1, 1969 to September 14, 1972, Goldbach served as First Deputy Commander of the 3rd Military District ( Leipzig ).
From October 1, 1972 to October 15, 1979, he already commands the 5th Military District ( Neubrandenburg ). In this position on October 7, 1974 he was awarded the rank of lieutenant general.
In 1979, Goldbach was transferred to work at the Ministry of National Defense. There, on October 16, 1979, he replaced Helmut Poppe as deputy minister of national defense and chief of rear services. From February 1, 1986 to April 18, 1990 (when the Ministry of National Defense was abolished) Goldbach was Deputy Minister of National Defense and Chief of Equipment and Armaments of the NNA.
On March 1, 1986 , on the 30th anniversary of the formation of the NNA , Goldbach was promoted to colonel general . On April 18, 1990, he headed the Office for Technology, Disarmament and Conversion ( German Amt für Technik, Abrüstung und Konversion ) in the Transitional Ministry of Disarmament and Defense. On September 30, 1990, Goldbach was dismissed.
On charges of indirect involvement in the killings near the Berlin Wall in the 1990s, a criminal case was instituted against him. On May 30, 1997, a Berlin state court sentenced Goldbach to 3 years and 3 months in prison for complicity in the killings.
On March 18, 2001, he was released from custody by a decree of a second-instance court.
Joachim Goldbach died on September 29, 2008 in Strausberg .
