The first cathedral was built at the beginning of the 5th century (founded at the end of the 4th century in the bishopric of Urs , hence the name of the Ursian basilica ) and was dedicated to the Resurrection of Christ. From the original construction survived only minor fragments presented in the exhibition of the Archbishop Museum of Ravenna. By 1733, the building was dilapidated and completely dismantled, retaining only the cylindrical campaign of the X century . The construction of the new cathedral was entrusted to the architect from Rimini, Gian-Francesco Buonamichi. In 1749, the solemn consecration of the Cathedral in the name of the Resurrection of Christ took place.
The facade of the cathedral is decorated with a three - arch portico , in which four columns from the original construction are mounted. The facade faces the statue of the Virgin Mary, mounted on a high pillar in 1830, as directed by Pope Clement VIII . The cathedral has three naves , the length of the central - 60 meters. Inside the cathedral there are numerous monuments of early Christian art ( sarcophagi of the 5th century, the pulpit of Bishop Agnelus, decorated with numerous decorative panels, etc.).
In the right transept there is the baroque chapel of Santa Maria del Sudore, which houses the image of the Virgin Mary revered in Ravenna. In the chapel are two early Christian sarcophagus:
- one used for the burial of Monsignor Rinaldo da Concorreggio, Bishop of Ravenna since Dante . The sarcophagus is decorated with the image of Christ with the Gospel in his hand, sitting on the throne, from which flow four biblical rivers, on the sides of it stand the apostles Peter and Paul , framed by palm trees;
- sarcophagus of the 5th century, in which in 1658 the relics of Saint Barbatian , counselor and confessor of Galla Placidia , locally venerated Saint Ravenna , were placed.
