Democracy Foundation Scandal
The scandal with the Democracy Foundation began in 2003 before the local elections, when Mikhail Chernoy in the newspaper Trud accused former Prime Minister Ivan Kostov of extorting money from him for the election campaign in 2001. After the scandal, Kostov's party lost the election.
Four years later, the fund, citing documents from the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Tourism of Cyprus, revealed that Chernoy did not own the donor companies. Mikhail Chernoy said that he made a bank transfer in order to discredit Kostov and the Bulgarian Democracy Fund.
