Latvian anti-fascist committee

The Latvian Anti-Fascist Committee ( Latvian. Latvijas antifašistiskā komiteja ) is a Latvian public organization. Actual activity began in 2005 , officially registered in the register of public organizations in 2007 . The main activity is countering the manifestations of Nazism , xenophobia , racism . He is a co-founder of the international movement " World without Nazism " [1] . The committee declares as its goal the formation of public opinion in the spirit of tolerance and inadmissibility of xenophobic sentiments in society. Holds anti-fascist rallies, acts as the organizer of conferences, annual gatherings of anti-fascist organizations in European countries. The co-chairs of the Latvian Anti-Fascist Committee are Joseph Koren [2] and Eduard Goncharov [3] .

Activities

In 2009, at the initiative of the committee, an international conference “The Future Without Nazism” was held in Riga. However, the Latvian authorities refused to enter the country to representatives of anti-fascist organizations in Russia and Estonia [4] .

The Latvian Anti-Fascist Committee condemns the celebration of the Day of Remembrance of the Latvian Legion , regarding it as "an act of scolding the outcome of the Victory over Nazism", leading to "undermining the values ​​of freedom and democracy." The committee called the refusal to hold an anti-fascist rally in March 2009 “rejection of the ideas of anti-fascism ” [5] . On March 16, police detained members of the Latvian Anti-Fascist Committee Eduard Goncharov and Joseph Koren , as well as deputy of the Riga City Council Viktor Dergunov , who came out to protest against the commemoration of the Latvian Legion [6] .

In February 2009, members of the Latvian Anti-Fascist Committee in the Polish village of Podgae paid tribute to the victims of the legionnaires of the 15th Latvian Division Waffen SS . In February 1945, in the village, the Latvian legionnaires burned alive 32 soldiers of the Polish division named after Tadeusz Kosciuszko [7] . The delegation laid flowers and lit lamps at the monument to the fallen Polish soldiers. Eduard Goncharov said in an interview with the Polish newspaper Glos Wielkopolski: “We do not want Latvia to be associated only with processions of SS veterans. Everyone who celebrates in our country on March 16 must first come to such a monument, and only then go out into the streets and proudly wear fascist uniforms and medals ” [8] .

On October 16, 2014, the Committee picketed the musical “Tsukurs. Herbert Tsukurs ”dedicated to the pilot, member of the Arays Command and war criminal Herbert Tsukurs , who took part in the Holocaust in Latvia [9] .

In 2017-18, the Committee supported the protests against translating school education in Latvia only into the Latvian language, calling it national and ethnic oppression. He also recalled that the existence of statelessness in Latvia is a sign of ethnic discrimination, since 99.5% of non-citizens are non-Latvians [10] .
