Biography
Boris Sergeevich Kashin was born on July 3, 1951 in Moscow. In 1973 he graduated from the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics of Moscow State University , after which he entered the graduate school of the Steklov Mathematical Institute (MIAN) of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR . Since 1976 he has been engaged in scientific work at MIAN [3] .
In 1976 he defended his thesis for the degree of Candidate of Physical and Mathematical Sciences in the specialty “Functional Analysis and Theory of Functions” on the topic “On Some Properties of Functional and Orthogonal Series” (supervisor - P. L. Ulyanov ). In 1977, he defended his thesis for the degree of Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences in the specialty “Mathematical Analysis” on the topic “General orthonormal systems and some questions of approximation theory” [3] .
On March 4, 1979, at the age of 27, he was elected from the October electoral district of Moscow as a deputy of the USSR Supreme Soviet of the 10th convocation (for a term of 5 years; B. S. Kashin’s deputy term ended in 1984).
In the same 1979, B. S. Kashin began teaching at the Mechanics and Mathematics Faculty of Moscow State University; in 1990 he was awarded the title of professor . I read lectures on approximation theory for Mekhmat students [3] [4] .
In 1980 he joined the Communist Party .
In 1985-1990, he was a deputy of the district council of the Oktyabrsky district of Moscow, chairman of the territorial deputy group [4] .
On May 30, 1997, B. S. Kashin was elected a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences ( RAS ) in the Department of Mathematics (mathematics) [5] .
In 2000 he was elected a member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation [6] . Since March 2003, became a member of the Presidium of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation. At the XIII Congress of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation (December 2008), it was not elected to the new composition of the Presidium of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation. Kashin is the author of a number of articles in which the support of the leaders of the St. Petersburg branch of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation who have been dismissed and expelled from the party by the decision of the Presidium of the Central Committee - V.I. Fedorov, S. B. Borzenko and others is expressed unequivocally. internal party democracy, etc. [7] [8] [9] [10]
In 2007, after the death in November 2006 of Academician P. L. Ulyanov , B. S. Kashin became the head of the department of the theory of functions and functional analysis of the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics of Moscow State University [4] [11] .
On December 22, 2011, B. S. Kashin was elected a full member of the Russian Academy of Sciences in the Department of Mathematical Sciences (mathematics) [5] . Now he is the Deputy Academic Secretary of the Mathematical Sciences Division of the Russian Academy of Sciences, a member of the Scientific Ethics Commission of the Russian Academy of Sciences and a member of the personnel committee of the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
Chief editor of the journal " Mathematical collection ."
In 2012, he was among the initiators of the law banning the adoption of Russian orphans by US citizens, also known as “the law of Dima Yakovlev”, “anti-syrotic” or “the law of scoundrels” [12] [13] .
In July 2013, at a meeting of the State Duma, B. S. Kashin sharply criticized the reorganization plan proposed by the government of the Russian Academy of Sciences , calling it an "adventure" [14] .
Scientific Activities
The main areas of interest of B. S. Kashin include the theory of orthogonal series , the theory of approximation , geometry of convex bodies . Moreover, in the theory of orthogonal series, he managed to give a positive solution to the long-standing problem of the existence in space a complete orthonormal system formed by series converging almost everywhere; so in space for the first time a basis was constructed in the sense of convergence almost everywhere . He also obtained geometric inequalities for orthogonal series and proposed a new method for studying orthogonal series based on the use of these inequalities [15] .
In the theory of approximation, B. S. Kashin dealt with the problem of orders of widths of Sobolev classes of smooth functions and proposed a method for estimating the widths of finite-dimensional sets, which became the basis for numerous further studies. Of fundamental importance for obtaining lower bounds is the result obtained by Kashin “on the incompressibility of the n- dimensional cube”. An essentially new (and quite unexpected) result obtained by Kashin in the theory of convex bodies was the fact that he discovered the existence of almost spherical sections of small codimension in multidimensional octahedra , which formed the basis of the “compressed measurement” signal processing method that found important practical applications. He also solved the old B. Knaster problem on the properties of level lines of continuous functions defined on a multidimensional sphere [15] .
