It underlies the three - beam street system : Novotorzhskaya - Sovetskaya - Volny Novgorod , which was designed by architect P.R. Nikitin after the great fire of 1763 . The streets diverge from the area in rays. Such a construction of the square gives the city center a rare harmony and compositional completeness.

A triumphal arch was installed on the square, which was subsequently dismantled as a sign of dislike of Paul I to Catherine II, who initiated this construction.

Other best architects of the 18th century also left their creations on the square: M.F. Kazakov , V.S. Obukhov, A.V. Kvasov and others. Based on the rich experience in the construction of St. Petersburg, Rome and Versailles, Russian architects found an interesting architectural composition.

Almost 100 years have passed from the preparation of the plan to its final practical implementation. Only in the 60s of the XIX century this area was completely built up with stone houses according to the designs of a talented group of architects.

The buildings surrounding the square are currently located: the residence of the Governor of the Tver Region and other administrative structures, the post office, the House of Technology, the House of Education Workers, the oldest cinema in the city of Vulkan.

On the facade of the post office there is a plaque with the inscription: "This square in 1917 was the site of mass rallies and demonstrations of revolutionary workers and soldiers of the city of Tver."

In 2008, a monument to Tver Prince Mikhail Yaroslavich was erected on the square.

By a decision of the city toponymic commission of October 10, 2018, approved by a majority vote of the deputies of the Tver City Duma, on November 2, 2018, Sovetskaya Square was renamed [2] into Mikhail Tversky Square , despite public protests, collection of signatures and online voting against renaming, which showed negative the attitude of the majority of tverichans to this initiative of the city authorities . The renaming ceremony was held on December 5, 2018 [3] .
