The castle was built on top of the Mali Plazur hill, which possessed a number of fortification benefits. This hill is a spur of the Medvednitsky mountain range, towering above Zagreb. On clear days, the city castle is visible from afar, its high main tower is especially noticeable. At the foot of the main tower is the Oltar domovine (Domestic Altar) memorial dedicated to Croatian soldiers who died in the 1991–1995 War of Independence [2] [3] .

History

Medvedgrad Castle was built in the XIII century, by decision of Pope Innocent IV , after the hordes of Batu ravaged the tract Zagreb , destroyed the cities of Hradec and Kaptol. From the observation deck of Medvedgrad, from a height of 500 meters, a beautiful view of Zagreb opens. Philippe Tourier, bishop of Zagreb, was engaged in construction in 1249–1254. Later, Medvedgrad passed into the possession of Slavonic bans (Stepan Shubich and others). During the earthquake of 1590, the fortress was badly destroyed and abandoned. In the XX century, the fortress was restored and now it houses a viewing platform, from where - from a height of more than 500 meters - a wonderful panoramic view of the city opens.

On March 27, 1472, the famous Croatian and Hungarian poet, Slavonic ban Janus Pannonius (Ivan Cheshmitsky) died in the castle of Medvedgrad.
