Story

The main character, Private Nikolai Ivanov, has been in captivity with the Mujahideen for 7 years. An Afghan peasant redeemed Nicholas when they were shooting him, and Nikolai replaced his murdered son. Nikolai accepted Islam, and the guy returned to his native village as a Muslim. At first, fellow villagers gladly accepted his native boyfriend, a long-absent countryman, but Abdullah’s unusual, orthodox attitude (such was his Islamic name) to money, family, religion, alcohol, theft — caused a hostile attitude towards him, especially from his older brother.
