Zafar-Mashal was identified as a result of seismic research in 1961, and the first geophysical work on it was carried out in 1985 and 1987. No exploratory drilling was carried out on the block. According to the contract, during the exploration period, the contractor is obliged to conduct three-dimensional seismic exploration here and to drill 2 exploration wells.

The drilling of the 1st exploratory well, the Zafar-Mashal field with the Heydar Aliyev floating semisubmersible drilling rig, began on February 9, 2004. The water depth at the drilling point is 740 m, and the design well depth is 7200 m. The main purpose of drilling is to open the “Break Formation” and the 8th horizon of the “Balakhanskaya Formation”.
