Poems

"Tango Magnolia" tells the story of a woman yearning for her lover (lyrical song hero) in Singapore , an English colony on the Malacca Peninsula.

 In a banana-lemon Singapore, in a storm,
Wrists and rings ringing,
Tropical blue magnolia,
You love me.

The song is named after a plant of the genus Magnolia , widely distributed in the southern latitudes. In Russian culture, it became a symbol of tropical countries, and apparently, therefore, Vertinsky, who had never been to Singapore at the time of writing the song, chose the image of a magnolia with large bright colors and a beautiful leafy crown for the tango.

Writing and Writing History

The song was first recorded on a phonograph record in 1932 at the British record company Columbia , the next record was followed a year later in Warsaw, at the studio of Syrena Electro. Subsequently, Columbia reissued its record in the United States . Also in the US, the song was published by Kismet on Vertinsky’s multi-song collections.

In Russia, the song was released on collections: Legend of the Century (1999), Vertinski (Alien Cities) (2000), What I Should Say (1994) [1] .

The fate of the song

In fact, "Tango Magnolia" has become the hallmark of its creator. In his memoirs, Vertinsky cites a case testifying to this: in Paris, an unfamiliar English gentleman asked him to perform his favorite song, the name of which he did not remember. Vertinsky recognized his “Tango” from the melody sung by the master, and performed it, which the Englishman was very pleased with. Only the next day, Alexander Nikolaevich learned that the Prince of Wales himself was this stranger [2] .

Became popular in the performance of the author, the song was repeatedly sung by other singers. In modern times, Philip Kirkorov (for the New Year’s program on NTV ) recorded his own version of Tango, Oleg Menshikov together with the 7B group, Oleg Pogudin and Herbert Morales [3] .

The original recording of “Tango Magnolia” also sounds in the film by Alexei Balabanov “ Morphine ” ( 2008 ), despite the fact that the events of the picture take place in 1917 - 1918, 14 years before the song was written.
