Overview

The three travelers from the TARDIS find themselves separated and locked up in a gaming station in entertainment shows. The doctor got into the Big Brother reality show, Rosa became a member of The Weakest Link show (the original source of the “ Weak Link ” program), hosted by Ann Droid (Ann Robinson), and Jack went to two Trino and Zu-Zan (Trinney Woodall and Suzanne Constantin), who are going to create an image for him, as in the What Not to Wear show (original source “ Take it off immediately! ”).

All three will learn that the show is more than the usual entertainment programs of the XXI century. In the Weak Link and Big Brother, the losing participants disintegrate, and in Remove it, the leading immediately cut the participants into pieces to create a new body style for them. Jack and the Doctor manage to escape from their shows, while Rose cannot leave, otherwise she will be disintegrated. The Doctor takes with her Linda, who was also a participant in Big Brother , and they discover that the gaming station is Sputnik 5 , on which the Doctor was previously in the “ Long Game ” series. The satellite is now controlled by Evil Wolf Corporation . Linda tells the Doctor that a hundred years ago, just when the Doctor stopped news broadcasts, the world plunged into chaos and progress on Earth stopped, which caused the ecology and living conditions to deteriorate.

Having met Jack, the team goes to save Rosa. They find her at the last round of the Weak Link , where after losing it they disintegrate. They are arrested, but they manage to escape to go to the 500th floor in the control room. There, Doctor and Jack discover that in fact people are not disintegrating, but teleporting. The main dispatcher, the cyber girl, gives the doctor the coordinates of the place where people are sent, for which the “masters” carry her to him. With the help of these coordinates, the Doctor, to his horror, finds out that 200 ships of the Far East are hanging over the Earth. Daleks come in contact with the Doctor, who promises the surviving Rose to save her, and then destroy them far away forever.

Additional Information

  • When the Doctor first tries to get out of the house of Big Brother , Linda says that because of the “Indestructible Seal”, no player can come out. An unbreakable seal is later mentioned in the series “Meeting at School” [1] , “The Evolution of the Daleks” [2] and “42” [3] . This is the only lock that the sonic screwdriver cannot open.
  • Playing in the Weak Link , Rosa answers the question about Bo 's Face , which first appeared in The End of the World [4] , 5 billion years after the events of the Evil Wolf . Bo's face is also mentioned in the series “The Long Game” [5] , and then appears in the series “Novaya Zemlya” [6] and “Cork” [7] .

Evil Wolf

  • The phrase "Evil Wolf" periodically appears in the episodes of the first season and in the episode " Captain Jack Harkness " of the TV series " Torchwood ."
  • In the episode " Turn Left " [8], this phrase is Rosa's message to the Doctor, which she passed through Donna to report about the coming End of the Universe.
  • Outside the series, the phrase appears on the BBC websites [9] and in the novels New Series Adventures . In addition, there was a site "Bad Wolf" [10] . The password on the UNIT website [11] is badwolf.

Daleks

  • When Rosa wakes up on the Dalek ship, the same sound effects as the sounds of the Cities of the Daleks in “Daleks” are heard in the background, as well as on the base in the “Daleks' Memories” and many other Dalek bases throughout the series.
  • The moment when the camera is far away from the face of the camera is directed at the Rose and it rests against the wall, very similar to the moment when Barbara Wright first met the Daleks in the “Daleks” series.
  • According to the DVD commentaries for this episode, the sound picture of the Daleks when the fleet appears includes a choir singing Mah Kor'ei in Hebrew (translation: What is happening? ).

Actors cast

  • Niche Nayar, the actress who played the female programmer in this episode, appeared in one special episode, in the classic story of Doctor Who , “The Paradise Towers” . This made her the second actor, who appeared in both the classic and the new series of the Doctor , after William Thomas, who appeared in the previous episode of " Noisy City ".
  • In the episode, the voices of Davina McCall, Ann Robinson, Suzanne Constantina and Trinni Woodall appeared.
  • According to Doctor Who: Confidential , although Ann Robinson was invited to voice the Ann Droid, everyone expected her to reject this offer. An actor who mimics voices even managed to hire when it turned out that Ann agrees.
  • Billie Piper has already appeared in a parody of the Weak Link with Ant and Dek in the morning show SM: TV live . Before the first screening of the Smith and Jones series, a special edition of The Weak Link with John Barrowman and David Tennant was shown. Ann Droid also appeared in this release and asked a few questions.

Production

  • The working title of this episode is “World Show”. [12]
  • In advertising publications, the titles of this episode and the episode “ Paths diverge ” wrote as “Paths diverge (part 1)” and “Paths diverge (part 2)”.
  • According to the episode 12 of Doctor Who Confidential , the team of the series intended to show the bare bottom of Jack . The scene was even filmed, but the editorial and publishing department of the BBC has forbidden to show this scene.
  • John Barrowman celebrated his birthday, while filming the segment, take it off immediately . The team gave him a toy distant , which, as Barrouman said (in the DVD commentary on the episode “The Paths diverge”), he hung over his fireplace. The footage when it unfolds far from the package is included in the DVD.
  • Russell T. Davis mentioned that the next “plot arch” was already named in this episode, and, moreover, it is an anagram. In the Weak Link of this episode, the answer was that the Great Cobalt Pyramid was built on the ruins of the famous Torchwood Institute. Torchwood ( Torchwood ) is an anagram of Doctor Who ( Doctor Who ). In 2006, the BBC launched a spin-off series called Torchwood about a team investigating newcomers and paranormal. The main character of the series is Jack .

External references

  • Davinadroid's voice tells the Doctor that he is on Channel 44000 and asks him not to express himself, repeating the rules of Davina McCall from the reality show Big Brother . Music playing at this time is the main theme of the British "Big Brother".
  • The final phrase of Dr. I Follow You is Davina McCall's traditional announcement to the participants of the Big Brother show in the UK.
  • Some of the questions used in the Weak Link were also used in the special issue of Doctor Who's The Weak Link.
  • When Linda asked the Doctor how he stayed so young, he replied, "I am moistened." Most likely this is a reference to Lady Cassandra from the episode of "The End of the World."
