Biography
Born in 1890 in the village of Kokshamary (now the Zvenigovsky district of the Mari El Republic ), located at the confluence of the Kokshagi in the Volga. Mariets . Honored Artist of the Mari Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic ( 1941 ) [1] . The father of the composer Andrei Yakovlevich Eshpay . Wife - Valentina Konstantinovna Togaeva (1897-1982), a native of the Chuvash village Akulevo ( Chuvash. Shemsher ) of the Cheboksary district, sister of the composer Anatoly Togaev [2] , a teacher of Russian language and literature, an expert, lover and performer of folk songs.
He was the creator of the first Mari instrumental works for symphony, wind orchestras, folk instrument orchestra, for violin and piano, a large number of solo and choral vocal compositions. Recorded and processed more than 500 folk tunes. In 1920, together with his cousin I.S. Palantay (Klyuchnikov) and V.M. Vasiliev, he participated in an expedition to collect and record mountain Mari songs. Candidate of Art History ( 1946 ).
He was awarded the Orders of the Red Star ( 1946 ) and the Badge of Honor ( 1951 ), two medals.
He was buried at the Vvedensky cemetery in Moscow [3] .
Memory
- In the homeland of Eshpay, in the village of Kokshamary , a memorial plaque was erected, the collective farm named after Yakov Eshpay (1992-2003), a house museum (1998), a bust (2010).
- In Yoshkar-Ola, he is named after one of the central streets (since 1964) and the Mari State Philharmonic Society (since 1990).
- In Kozmodemyansk, the Palace of Culture named after Jacob Eshpay.
- Street in the village of Igisol Kuzhenersky district.
Interesting Facts
In the film A Song of Happiness (USSR, 1934), Y. Eshpai was the prototype of the main character Kavirli [4] .
