William Etty ( English William Etty ; March 10, 1787 , York - November 13, 1849 , ibid.) - English painter. Known as an outstanding colorist. The main theme of his work was a naked female nature.

Biography
Born in a large family of a miller, from an early age showed interest in painting. In accordance with the wishes of his father, Etti studied for 7 years with an engraver in Hull . Etti began his studies by sketching landscapes, copying various images, drawings, prints and more. In 1806, at the invitation of his uncle, who supported his desire to study painting, he came to London , and in 1807 he entered the Royal Academy of Arts , where Henry Fuseli became his mentor. In 1811, after many attempts on the wall of talented students of the Academy, the picture of young William Etti " Telemachus Rescuing Antiope" appeared on the wall.
A great influence on William Ettie in those years was made by the artist Thomas Lawrence , in whose house Ettie lived while studying in London.
In 1816, Etti briefly visited Paris and Florence .
In 1820, his Coral Searchers, shown at the Royal Academy, attracted much attention. Even greater success was in the painting "Arrival of Cleopatra in Cilicia", shown next year.
In 1822 he went to Italy, where he spent most of his time in Venice , studying the old Venetian masters (such as Titian , Tintoretto , Veronese ) and gaining experience in handling color.
In 1840 and 1841, Etti made a pilgrimage to the Netherlands to study paintings by Dutch artists, including Rubens, in churches and public galleries of this country.
