History

The traditions of the celebration were laid in the 1920s in Helsinki [1] .

Holiday Progress

The festival is held annually in February, when applicants (students of the last grade of the gymnasium) finish their studies. In the graduating class of the gymnasium, in contrast to the elementary grades, study ends already in February. After that, graduates prepare for state exams for the matriculation certificate , which take place at the end of the second half of the year. Graduates ("abi") celebrate graduation on Thursday between February 12 and 18. On this day, applicants sit at their desks for the last time before graduating student exams, and then put on funny carnival clothes and drive around the city by truck, throwing sweets to people passing by [2] , [3] . On the sides of the trucks, decorated canvases with the names of the gymnasiums, caricatures and cartoons are usually strung on some topical issue linked to the life of the school. In cities where there are many gymnasiums, decorating trucks is turning into a real competition. In many gymnasiums, graduates dress up in fancy dress on the day of the holiday. In some gymnasiums, costumes follow a theme, in other gymnasiums, graduates can dress as they want, and sometimes the class teacher may suggest a theme. The holiday resembles a carnival, this is the last opportunity for graduates to have fun, because after this holiday they begin to prepare for exams.

The day after penkarit, students of the second, pre-graduation class celebrate because they become seniors in the gymnasium. Their holiday is called the " day of the elders " ( Fin. Vanhojen päivä ) [4] .
