UEFA Champions League 1997/1998

UEFA Champions League 1997/98 - The 6th draw of the UEFA Champions League and the 43rd draw of the European Champions Cup. The final was held on May 20, 1998 at the Amsterdam ArenA stadium . The winner was Real Madrid , who defeated Juventus 1-0, and for Juventus this final was the third in a row. The tournament was held according to a new scheme: for the first time two qualifying rounds were held, and at the decisive stage the teams were divided into 6 groups. In the quarter-finals were all the winners of the groups, as well as the two best teams from among the runners-up. For the first time, not only the champions of their countries took part in the tournament, but also the second winners of the eight strongest championships.

  • The tournament was attended by a record number of teams - 55.
  • For the first time, one country ( Germany ) had three representatives in the draw at once: a champion ( Bavaria ), a silver medalist ( Bayer ) and a winner of the previous League ( Borussia ).
  • In 145 matches of the tournament 437 goals were scored. The average performance was 3.24 goals per game.
  • Košice won the dubious title of the first team that lost all 6 matches of the group tournament.
  • Real Madrid has improved its own achievement, for the seventh time becoming the best team on the continent. Prior to that, the royal club, this peak has not submitted 32 years.
  • Only one club from among those who got into the tournament grid from second place in the championship reached the quarterfinal stage - Leverkusen Bayer became them, and Juventus reached the final.
  • The first match at the Santiago Bernabéu stadium between Real and Borussia was delayed by 45 minutes due to the fact that the gate differed in size from the standard by 2 cm.
