He was brought up in the land cadet corps, from which he served in the army infantry, and in 1770-1772, in the rank of second-major of the Narva infantry regiment , he was in almost all battles with the Polish Confederates and was awarded the Order of St. July 14, 1772 . George 4 classes (No. 160 according to the cavalier list of Sudravsky and No. 188 according to the list of Grigorovich - Stepanov)

For jealousy and quickness shown during all the time of the blockade of the Krakow castle.

In 1774, Gagrin participated in pacifying the Pugachev uprising . Beloborodov , one of the associates of the impostor, acted in the Kungur province; Gagrin with a small detachment went there and on January 23 arrived at Kungur, besieged by the rebels; when he appeared, they all fled. Gagrin returned to his post, but four days later, having received news that 2,000 rebels had again accumulated in the vicinity of Kungur, he immediately appeared, found them in the village of Ordynsky, entered into a stubborn battle, defeated and scattered the rebels, took 18 cast-iron cannons and captured 62 people; in this battle he was wounded in the leg.

Upon learning that the rebels appeared near the Krasnoufimsk fortress , Gagrin quickly moved against them, on February 12 he overtook the village of Ivanova and, despite the superiority of forces, defeated them and took away 2 guns. The rioters fled and locked themselves in Krasnoufimsk; On February 19, Gagrin appeared there, a mile away from the city he was met by a large crowd, he soon defeated her, approached the fortress and opened an attack from two sides. The rebels defended themselves for a long time; finally, exhausted, fled from the fortress. The winner of ten miles chased the fleeing, took 3 guns from the battle and found 5 guns in the fortress. The surroundings of Kungur have been cleared.

Gagrin then went to Yekaterinburg . The rebels fortified the Utkinsk plant with a snow wall, doused with water and turned into ice from a cold, surrounded the shaft with slingshots, placed tours on top of it, and cannons at the gate. Gagrin took an ice fortress and chased 6 versts for escaping rebels. Despite the fact that the combat losses of the rebels amounted to only 15 people, but 587 people with two banners surrendered "from fear", in addition, Gagrin captured 2 guns. To pursue, Gagrin sent all his cavalry with the addition of jailers mounted on horses, who killed another 45 people and took 308 prisoners and 4 guns. In addition to horse rangers, Gagrin successfully used skiers.

Before he could even return to the conquered fortress, he received news that Beloborodov was approaching with great force. Gagrin immediately went to meet him, but Beloborodov had only 425 people and Gagrin defeated him. In contrast to Gagrin at Utkin factory on May 12, 1774, by special decree of Empress Catherine II, he was promoted to prime minister .

Meanwhile, Pugachev , several times struck by Prince Golitsyn , began to weaken in the Orenburg Territory. This circumstance forced the crowds devastating the Kungur province to return to Pugachev.

But Kungur’s calm did not last long: in June Pugachev, cramped with troops, turned to Kama and with all his might rushed to Kungur; Gagrin repelled him and forced him to retreat to Krasnoufimsk, and from there to Ossa.

Then Gagrin took part in repelling the Pugachevites from Yekaterinburg and pursuing them in the direction of the Kazan province . In August, Gagrin defended the Krasnoufimsky fortress.

Gagrin's courage and prudent ordering were awarded the rank of lieutenant colonel and the village.

He died with the rank of colonel in 1780 .
