History
The first mention of a residential settlement on the territory of modern Phaju dates back to 475 . Then this territory was part of the state of Goguryo , and here was the administrative unit of the status of "hyun" Sulihol (Suliholhyun). In 757, after an administrative reform (already within the Silla state), Sulihol changed its name to Ponson (Ponsonhyun). During the Koryo Dynasty , in 1174 - the name was changed to Sovon (Sovonhyun). In 1393, on the basis of Hyun Sowon, the county (gun) Sowon was formed, renamed Wonphyun in 1398 , in the era of the Joseon Dynasty . In 1414, the village of Köha was annexed to it. In 1459, Phaju was given the modern name and status of “mok”. In 1895, Phaju received the status of a county (gun). The status of the city was obtained in 1996 . Near Phaju is the famous place of Panmunjom , in which an armistice agreement was signed in the Korean War in 1953 . [one]
