On March 15, 2009, as a candidate from the left Farabundo National Liberation Front, Marty defeated Rodrigo Avila , a candidate from the center-right Nationalist Republican Alliance (ARENA), receiving 51.32% of the vote. [1]
Soon after his inauguration, he signed an agreement on the restoration of diplomatic relations between El Salvador and Cuba , terminated 50 years earlier. [2]
