Saint Basil was born in the village of Mrkonichi on the Popovy pole in Herzegovina on December 28, 1610 and was baptized with the name Stoyan. His parents were Peter and Anastasia (Ana) Jovanovic. When Stoyan grew up, he was given to the nearest monastery in Zavala , where he studied religious and secular sciences. Later, he moved to the Tvrdosh monastery , in which he received tonsure with the name Vasily, in honor of the father of the Church St. Basil the Great, he was soon awarded the deacon’s and then the priestly rank.
After a trip to Montenegro to the Cetinje monastery, Vasily became the archimandrite of the Tvrdosh monastery. Also, St. Basil made a trip to Little Russia , having visited Orthodox shrines, and Mount Athos . Returning to Trebin from Athos, he stopped in Pecs - the city in which the residence of the Serbian patriarchs was located. There, Patriarch Paisy I Yanyevats, along with the Serbian bishops , ordained Vasily as bishops on the Transfiguration of the Lord in 1638 , placing him Metropolitan Trebinsky with a residence in Tvrdos.
After the Turks murdered the Eastern Herzegovinian Metropolitan Paisius Trebeshanin, Patriarch St. Gabriel (Raich) reunited the Eastern and Western Hercegovinian Dioceses into a single Zhololm Metropolis with a center in the city of Niksic under St. Basil.
Turkish oppression forced St. Basil to leave his residence near Niksic and settle in the Ostrog monastery , protected from the Herzegovins by the Montenegrin castle of Pandurica . In Ostrog, St. Basil, along with other ascetics, renewed the Vvedensky Church, and also built the Holy Cross Exaltation Church. With his labors, the Ostroh cave turned into a real monastery.
Saint Basil died on April 29 (May 12) in his cell in the monastery of Ostrog. From the rock, in which his cell was located, a vine grew.
